Similar to the conventional domain name system (DNS), the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a decentralised naming infrastructure built on the Ethereum blockchain that enables users to register human-readable domain names. By giving customers an easy-to-remember domain name rather than a complicated wallet address, ENS seeks to make sending and receiving cryptocurrency more straightforward.
The Ethereum Name Service was created as an open-source project by the Ethereum community and debuted in May 2017 with the goal of enhancing user experience while interacting with the Ethereum blockchain. The Ethereum blockchain was used as the foundation, and smart contracts were used to translate human-readable domain names into Ethereum addresses.
By enabling users to register a distinctive domain name that can be used as an alias for their public wallet address, the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) offers a more user-friendly method of sending and receiving bitcoins. This makes it simpler to transmit and receive cryptocurrency because users no longer need to memorise or share their lengthy and intricate wallet addresses.
A versatile tool for decentralised systems, ENS can also be used to map other forms of data, like IPFS hashes, swarm content hashes, and more, to human-readable domain names.
