ICP, or Internet Computer, is a blockchain-based protocol that aims to build an open, decentralised internet platform for developing and deploying applications. With a variety of tools and features available, it makes it easier to create secure, scalable applications, and its distributed network aims to boost both performance and security.
The DFINITY Foundation created Internet Computer (ICP), which debuted its mainnet in May 2021. The project has its roots in academic research and aims to transform the way the internet works by providing a scalable, secure, and decentralized platform for building and deploying applications.
The goal of Internet Computer is to make it easier for programmers to create and deploy a variety of applications, such as social media, content sharing, and decentralised finance (DeFi), on a decentralised and open internet platform. For the creation of scalable and secure applications, the platform provides a comprehensive set of tools and features, including smart contracts, canisters (compute units), and the Internet Identity framework.
One of Internet Computer's distinguishing characteristics is its capacity to distribute applications over many data centres, resulting in a dispersed network with enhanced performance, security, and censorship resistance over conventional internet hosting services.
