The layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum called Optimism (OP) attempts to make the Ethereum blockchain more efficient and scalable. It is intended to address the problem of high gas costs and long transaction times on the Ethereum network, allowing for the speedy and efficient processing of more transactions.
Karl Floersch and Jinglan Wang launched Optimism in 2019 with the intention of developing an intuitive and scalable Ethereum solution. The Optimistic Rollup technology, a layer-2 solution that makes use of optimistic consensus to process transactions off-chain and settle them on-chain, has been actively developed by the Optimism team.
The use case for Optimism is to give decentralised apps (dApps) and developers on the Ethereum network a scalable and effective solution. It makes it easier for dApps to profit from quicker transaction confirmations and cheaper gas costs, which increases user interest in interacting with dApps and taking part in the Ethereum ecosystem.
Since Optimism also supports the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), current Ethereum decentralised applications (dApps) can be simply transferred to the Optimism network without requiring major code modifications. Because of this, developers can easily deploy their dApps on Optimism and provide a smooth user experience.
