What is Bitcoin Berachain (BERA)?

Berachain (BERA) is the native gas and staking token of Berachain, a Layer 1 blockchain that launched its mainnet on 6 February 2025. BERA is used to pay transaction fees and secure the network, while governance is handled separately through BGT, a non-transferable token earned by participating in Berachain's Proof-of-Liquidity consensus mechanism.

The History of Berachain

Berachain originated from the Bong Bears NFT collection in 2021 and gradually evolved into a full Layer 1 blockchain project. The team raised approximately 142 million US dollars across two funding rounds, including a 100 million US dollar Series B in April 2024 led by Framework Ventures and Brevan Howard Digital, with backing from Polychain Capital and Samsung Next. Berachain mainnet went live on 6 February 2025 with a genesis supply of 500 million BERA.

The Use Case of Berachain

The primary use case for BERA is as the gas and staking token of the Berachain network. It is used to pay transaction fees, which are burned to reduce circulating supply, and to secure the network through validator staking. The more BERA a validator stakes, the more frequently they are selected to propose blocks.

BERA also sits at the centre of Berachain's tri-token economy alongside BGT (governance) and HONEY (the native stablecoin). This separation allows network security and DeFi liquidity to scale independently. The network is fully EVM-compatible, allowing developers to deploy Ethereum-based applications without modification.
