The History of Nexo

Nexo was founded in 2018 by Antoni Trenchev and Kosta Kantchev as one of the first regulated platforms offering crypto-backed lending and earning products. The NEXO token launched the same year and has since become the loyalty backbone of the Nexo platform. As of early 2026, Nexo serves millions of users across more than 200 jurisdictions, making it one of the largest centralised crypto lenders globally.

The Use Case of Nexo

The primary use case for NEXO is to unlock loyalty benefits within the Nexo platform. Holders move into higher loyalty tiers based on the share of NEXO in their portfolio, which entitles them to higher yields on savings, lower interest rates on crypto-backed loans, improved exchange rates on Nexo's swap product, additional free withdrawals, and cashback on the Nexo Card.

In the past, NEXO holders also received dividend-style payouts from the company's profits. While those distributions are no longer a current feature, the token's loyalty utility positions NEXO closer to an exchange utility token than a typical DeFi governance token, with value driven by the size and activity of the Nexo platform.
