What is Plasma (XPL)?

Plasma (XPL) is the native token of Plasma, a Layer 1 blockchain purpose-built for stablecoin payments that launched its mainnet beta on 25 September 2025. XPL is used as the gas token, the staking asset that secures Plasma's Proof-of-Stake consensus, and for governance of the network.

The History of Plasma

Plasma was incepted in 2024 with the mission of building blockchain infrastructure optimised specifically for stablecoins. The project raised approximately 24 million US dollars in private funding from investors including Peter Thiel, Framework Ventures, Bitfinex, and Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino. Plasma's mainnet beta launched on 25 September 2025 with more than 2 billion US dollars in stablecoin liquidity from day one and over 100 DeFi integrations including Aave, Ethena, and Euler. The token has a total supply of 10 billion XPL.

The Use Case of Plasma

The primary use case for XPL is to power the Plasma blockchain. It is used to pay for transactions, settle gas fees that have been paid in stablecoins through Plasma's paymaster system, and stake to secure the network through validator participation.

Plasma's main differentiator is zero-fee USDT transfers, made possible by a protocol-level paymaster that sponsors gas for simple stablecoin sends. The chain is also EVM-compatible and anchors its transaction history to Bitcoin for additional security. As stablecoin payment volume grows, XPL is intended to capture value as the underlying network asset.
